Positive Impact from New Phone and Computer Policy

The fall 22 academic year brought new and tighter regulations for mobile phones among the Corps of Cadets. The policy is simple: nobody has one.   “The literature is clear that mobile phones are a distraction to student learning,” said Garrison Sergeant Major William Mott OBE MVO, Commandant of Cadets. “This year we decided to make a change and the results are remarkable after only a short time.”   On arrival, all Cadets were required to turn in their phones. They are kept in a safe place. To overcome parental concerns about communicating with their sons, parents received direct phone […]

School Rings: A Tradition Rooted to the Military

The tradition of wearing a school ring dates back to 1835 and has military roots. The first class rings were worn by those at the US Military Academy at West Point. It extended beyond the military as increasing numbers graduated from high school and then attending college. Wearing a class ring was a sign of accomplishment and a symbol of distinction among society.   The tradition continues at VFMAC and is an exciting day when the Josten’s representative arrives to show Cadets the offerings they may select to memorialize their education and achievement in the form of a class ring.

Cadets Prepare 7,000 Meals, Support Local Food Pantry and Senior Center

Character development is one of the Five Cornerstones around which a VFMAC education is based. Unlike academic excellence or physical development, it is a harder one to measure. There isn’t necessarily a test – rather character development is a process of many activities over time.   Among those activities are two initiatives intended to help Cadets see beyond themselves to the needs of a greater community.   A regional food pantry creates meals shipped around the world. When reconstituted, the individual meals provide nutrition to those in need of it. VFMA Cadets measured, weighed and packed rice and assorted products […]
